Dr. Isaias Irgau, MD, FACS, FRCS (Ed), FASMBS is president and co-founder of the Christiana Institute of Advanced Surgery (CHRIAS).
He has extensive experience with
minimally invasive weight loss surgery.
In conjunction with his associate, Dr. Gail Wynn, he was the first to perform the LAP-BAND® procedure and the first to firmly establish the laparoscopic approach to Roux-n-Y gastric bypass in the state of Delaware. Dr. Irgau has personally performed over 3,000 bariatric procedures with
excellent results. He and his associates at Chrias started and established the Bariatric Surgery Programs in three of Delaware’s leading medical centers including Christiana Care Health Systems, Saint Francis Health Care and Bayhealth. More recently
Dr Irgau played a leading role in the establishment of a Center Of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery at the The American Surgery Center, one of a handful of ambulatory surgery centers in the United States to earn the prestigious designation.
Dr. Irgau graduated from Bristol University Medical School in England and has a double fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the American College of Surgeons. He has authored numerous publications and academic presentations and
was elected Young Surgeon of the Year by the Delaware Chapter of the American College of Surgeons in 2006.
Dr Irgau is fluent in a number of languages including Italian, Tigrinya and Amharic. He is a devoted family man who has made Delaware his home for the last 30 years. He is immensely proud of his four children who have gone to attend Columbia, Harvard, Stanford and Tuft University. His interests outside medicine include reading, current affairs, cinema and soccer. Dr Irgau is the author of The Tigrayan Electrician- Memories of my Father and his Beloved Motherland, which has received stellar reviews. He is also a regular contributor on Bariatric Friday, a health education podcast of United Medical YouTube channel.
